Tuesday, March 14 Growing Smarter Initiative – Improving the Way Arizona Grows Steven Betts, our featured dinner speaker, will discuss the many options open to Arizona as it continues to grow at a phenomenal rate. We all recognize the importance of planning for our communities, but how can we choose the best alternative to get that job done in the most beneficial way? Come and listen to Steven as he compares Governor Hull’s Growing Smarter Act (1998), Growing Smarter Plus Act (2000), Sierra Club’s Boundary Line Initiative, and the Citizens Growth Management Act. There will be time at the end of the presentation to ask your questions. Steven Betts, a shareholder with Gallagher & Kennedy, practices primarily in the area of state and local government affairs, including land use, zoning, and real estate development law. He received his law degree with honors from De Paul University School of Law. Governor Hull appointed him to the Growing Smarter Commission. He is very active in business, civic, and political organizations. Members and sponsors are encouraged to invite potential members to join us for this information-packed evening. Be there to hear what Steve has to say.
Technical Session John Becker joins us to share his insights on the current developments in estate planning. President Clinton vetoed the 1999 Tax Bill passed by Congress. Mr. Becker will discuss legislative proposals that were a part of that Tax Bill and help us gain insight into what Congress is thinking about the current estate taxes. Mr. Becker will address various aspects that make up a good estate plan. He will discuss what individuals of moderate to high net worth are doing to minimize the estate tax. This is important for all of us to position our own personal portfolios with the same care we exercise for our companies. __________________________________

Friends of FEI |
|
|
Since many organizations in the Valley now have a more casual dress code, we have changed our practice to provide more flexibility in your choice of dress for the meeting. Business formal and business casual are both acceptable — so please take your pick. Feel free to attend the FEI meetings wearing the office attire that is standard for you. John Becker Bio John graduated from ASU College of Law (JD magna cum laude), received his LLM in Taxation in 1988, and earned his CPA in Nebraska. He is a member of the Arizona State Bar Association and the Arizona Opera Board of Trustees. |

Friday, March 17, Jeff Henley, CFO of Oracle Corporation, a FEI National Strategic Partner, will be at the Point Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort to present an Executive Briefing from 8 to 9 a.m. Registration and breakfast is from 7 to 8 a.m. Jeff has unique perspectives on the evolving e-business environment that he will share with us. Jeff’s company is transforming its systems and processes to take advantage of the internet platform and realize $1 billion in savings as a result. This presentation is targeted to senior financial executives, both within and outside the FEI membership. Please plan to attend and bring a prospective member or two with you. It will be well worth your investment of time. |
We will close out our regular programs on April 5 with a Technical Session by Tom Mareel of William M. Mercer, Jack Henry of Arthur Anderson as our program speaker, and our four University scholarship recipients. Phil Livingston gave an excellent update on FEI National at our February meeting. We had the year’s best attendance. Dan Regan won the drawing of dinner for two — first name out of the hat! Congratulations, Dan. The Nominating Committee is putting together a slate of officers for the 2000-2001 year. They will present it for review at the March 8th Board meeting and to the general membership at the April 5 monthly meeting. |
